Read more This project is an entry for the 2006 international open design competition for an expansion to Asplund's early modern masterpiece, the Stockholm Public Library. Parallel bar buildings sited perpendicular to the street which Asplund envisioned in his masterplan (most of which was not built to his design) are here inverted from mass to void, reinterpreted as giant hollow structural elements.
The new building leans forward, for example, to touch the old library making a significant yet respectful connection. 2017-06-22 · When the Stockholm Public Library opened in 1928, it wasn’t fully completed due to financial issues. But by 1932, this Gunnar Asplund masterpiece was complete and quickly became recognised for stripping away almost all of its architectural decorative flourishes, letting its geometrical basis shine through. Accordingly, Stockholm Public Library has been interpreted as "revolutionary architecture" in the tradition of Ledoux and Boullée. However, since such projects did not appear in popular publication until early 1930:s, Asplund's design seems to be based on other sources.
